The job: a Bosch B21CT80SNS French-door refrigerator
Last updated:
Case Study · Bosch Refrigerator Not Cooling · Lake Forest Park, WA
This Bosch refrigerator in Lake Forest Park wasn’t cooling: a 7-year-old Bosch B21CT80SNS French-door model. The freezer couldn’t keep ice cream solid, the ice maker had stopped, and the fan was loud. Behind the freezer panel the evaporator coil was packed in ice: the defrost system had stopped working. We replaced the failed defrost sensor. Real photos from the job below.
What happened
The complaint
The homeowner’s Bosch B21CT80SNS is about 7 years old. Three things had gone wrong at once: the freezer couldn’t keep ice cream solid, the ice maker had stopped making ice, and the fan behind the freezer was loud.
The diagnosis
With the freezer’s back panel off, the evaporator coil was packed in ice from top to bottom. A frost-free refrigerator is supposed to melt that frost off on a regular defrost cycle, so this much ice meant the defrost system wasn’t working. The failed part was the defrost sensor.
The fix
We replaced the defrost sensor, ran a defrost cycle to clear the coil, and confirmed the refrigerator was operating normally before we left. The repair carries our 90-day parts and labor warranty.

Why choose us
We find the cause, not just the ice
Melting the ice makes a fridge cold again for a few days. Finding the defrost part that failed is what keeps the ice from coming back.
One technician, start to finish
The same owner-technician diagnoses the problem, orders the part, and comes back to install it. No call center and no subcontractors.

There are several possible causes, and one of the most common is a failed defrost system. A frost-free refrigerator melts the frost off its evaporator coil on a regular defrost cycle. If any part of that defrost system fails, frost keeps building until the coil is packed in ice and cold air can’t move through it. On this Lake Forest Park Bosch, the coil was completely iced over and the fix was a new defrost sensor.
Those three symptoms together often point to one problem: an iced-over evaporator. Ice around the coil can catch the fan behind it, and a freezer that can’t hold temperature won’t keep making ice. On this job all three traced back to the failed defrost sensor.
Unplugging it and letting the ice melt can bring it back for a while, but if a defrost part has failed the ice builds up again. The lasting fix is finding and replacing the part that stopped the automatic defrost.
