What happened

From "won't light" to fixed

The complaint

One burner on this Jenn-Air six-burner range, in a home in Seattle, stopped igniting completely. The rest of the cooktop still worked, but that burner wouldn't light no matter what.

The diagnosis

We raised the cooktop panel to reach the gas valve manifold underneath and tested each of the four valve assemblies feeding the burners. One had failed and wasn't letting gas through to that burner — the rest tested fine.

The fix

We replaced the failed gas valve, reconnected the wiring at the control panel, and tested every burner for a clean flame and no gas leaks before closing the range back up.

Common gas range ignition problems

Burner won't ignite at all?

Usually one of a few things: a faulty igniter, a bad spark module, or — like this Jenn-Air — a gas valve that's failed and isn't letting gas through. We test each one to find which it is before recommending a repair.

Burner clicks but doesn't light?

That usually points to the igniter working but no gas reaching the burner, often clogged burner ports. It can also be a failing gas valve, which is why we test the actual components rather than guessing.

Is a broken gas valve a common repair?

It's less common than a clogged burner port or a failing igniter, but it happens, especially on ranges that see heavy use. When it's the valve, replacement is the fix — it's not something to clean or reseat.
