The evaporator area: fan, refrigerant lines, and sensor wiring
Last updated:
Case Study · Liebherr Freezer Repair · Seattle, WA
The call: the freezer on a Liebherr CS 2060 in a Seattle kitchen was frosting over and not cooling properly, a typical problem on this model. The fix was a new defrost sensor, mounted at the top of the evaporator as Liebherr’s instructions specify, not just back in the original spot. The same refrigerator also had a dead control panel (black display, buttons not responding), which we replaced on the same job. Real photos from the job below.
What happened
The complaint
The freezer on a Liebherr CS 2060 PremiumPlus NoFrost was frosting over and not cooling properly. It’s a stainless refrigerator-freezer with two freezer drawers, made in Austria; the rating plate is dated June 2014. On top of that, the control panel display had gone black and none of the buttons worked.
The diagnosis
The frost was a defrost problem: on a NoFrost model the evaporator is defrosted automatically, and the electronics rely on a sensor on the evaporator to manage it. When that sensor reads wrong, frost builds up, airflow drops, and the freezer can’t hold temperature. It’s a typical problem on this model. The dead control panel was a separate failure.
The fix
We fitted a new defrost sensor from Liebherr’s sensor repair kit (9590 206-02, a 4.7 kΩ sensor with cable). Following Liebherr’s instructions, the new sensor went at the top of the evaporator instead of the original spot. We also replaced the control panel. Liebherr repairs carry our 1-year parts and labor warranty.

Done the way Liebherr specifies
The new defrost sensor wasn’t just clipped back where the old one was. It went where Liebherr’s instructions put it, at the top of the evaporator.

Questions
On a NoFrost Liebherr, the freezer defrosts itself automatically, and the electronics rely on a sensor on the evaporator to manage that defrost. When the sensor reads wrong, frost builds up on the evaporator, airflow drops, and the freezer stops cooling properly. That’s a typical problem on the CS 2060. On this Seattle job we replaced the defrost sensor and, following Liebherr’s instructions, mounted the new one at the top of the evaporator.
Yes. On this CS 2060, the control panel display was dark and none of the buttons responded, and we replaced the control panel. We test the electronics first, so the part we replace is the part that actually failed.

It has more than one possible cause. On this CS 2060 it was frost building up on the evaporator from a defrost sensor fault. On a Liebherr CBS 2062 in Seattle, the freezer’s sealed system had a refrigerant leak and needed a new compressor (see that case study). On a CS 2060 in Lake Forest Park, it was the main power board. We test before recommending a repair.
Defrosting by hand melts the ice for a while, but if the defrost sensor is the cause, the frost builds back up. The lasting fix is replacing the part that failed.
