What happened

From a hot refrigerator to an annual maintenance plan

The complaint

The owner of this Sub-Zero 736TCI, in a condo tower at 10700 NE 4th St in downtown Bellevue, called because the refrigerator felt hot along the bottom. The compressor label is dated January 2008, so the unit is about 18 years old. That's not old for a built-in Sub-Zero, which typically lasts 20–35+ years.

The diagnosis

With the bottom grille off, the cause was obvious: the condenser coil was almost completely matted over with dust and lint. The 736TCI has two separate sealed systems, one for the refrigerator and one for the freezer, and both reject their heat through that condenser. We checked the compressor's shell temperature (113.2°F) and its running current (0.86 A) and read the data tag and compressor labels before touching anything.

The fix & next steps

We cleaned the condenser on the spot and restored airflow across the coil. During the inspection we also found the door gasket torn and pulling away along the hinge side, so we sent the owner an estimate to replace it. The customer also signed up for annual maintenance, so the condenser gets cleaned before it clogs again.

Common Sub-Zero refrigerator problems

Why is the bottom of my Sub-Zero hot?

The condenser and compressor live behind the bottom grille, and they're supposed to give off heat. When the condenser coil is packed with dust, like on this 736TCI, that heat can't get out, so the area feels much hotter than usual and the compressor has to work harder. Cleaning the condenser is the first thing we check.

Is a dirty condenser a big deal?

It can be. A clogged condenser makes the whole system run hotter and longer. On a refrigerator that's expected to last decades, cleaning it is cheap insurance compared to a sealed system repair.

Why replace a torn door gasket?

A torn or detached gasket lets warm, humid kitchen air into the cabinet every hour of the day. The refrigerator has to run longer to make up for it, and you can get frost or condensation near the leak. That's why we quoted a gasket replacement on this job.
