A 1990 Sub-Zero 550, rebuilt instead of replaced
The nameplate on this built-in Sub-Zero Model 550 in Kirkland reads December 1990 and Refrigerant 12. The 550 runs two separate sealed systems — one for the refrigerator, one for the freezer — each with its own compressor, and the nameplate lists a separate refrigerant charge for each.
What we found
The problem was on the refrigerator side. With the back panel off, the old evaporator was frosted over only across part of its coil instead of evenly. An uneven frost pattern like that is one of the signs we look at when judging whether a sealed system is still moving refrigerant the way it should.
What we replaced
In November 2025 we replaced the refrigerator compressor and evaporator with OEM parts, flushed the system, and replaced the condenser fan motor in the machine compartment above the unit. It has run since with no callbacks, and the work carries a 1-year warranty.
Why we converted it to R-134a
R-12 hasn't been produced in the US since the mid-1990s, so the rebuilt system was converted to R-134a. R-134a systems use a different type of compressor oil than R-12, which is why the old system was flushed before the new parts went in.

Is a 30-year-old Sub-Zero worth repairing?
Often, yes. Built-in Sub-Zero refrigeration commonly lasts 20 to 35 years or more, and the cabinet, doors, and custom panels on a unit like this 550 are built into the kitchen around it. Replacing it usually means more than buying a new refrigerator — the opening, the panels, and sometimes the cabinetry have to fit the new one.
On older units still running R-12, a compressor or evaporator failure isn't the end. The sealed system can be rebuilt with new parts and converted to R-134a, as on this Kirkland job. Common Sub-Zero problems
My Sub-Zero is running but not cooling. Is it the compressor?
Not necessarily. On the Sub-Zero freezer in Everett, the cause was a failed start relay and overload, a much smaller part. On this Kirkland 550, the refrigerator compressor and evaporator did need replacing. We test the actual components before recommending a repair.
